STIMULATOR
THE STIMULATOR IS AN EXCELLENT SEARCHING PATTERN, REMINISCENT TO TROUT OF THE
MANY HOPPERS AND STONE FLIES THEY HAVE EATEN OVER THE YEARS. I ESPECIALLY LIKE TO
USE IT AS PART OF A “HOPPER DROPPER” SET UP.
I HAVE FOND MEMORIES FLY FISHING DURING THE FALL ON THE ALLEGHENY RIVER IN POTTER
COUNTY. MY FAVORITE RIG IS A SIZE 8 STIMULATOR TIED TO 4X TIPPET. TAKE AN 18 INCH
LENGTH OF 6X TIPPET AND ATTACH IT TO THE BEND OF THE STIMULATOR HOOK WITH A
CLINCH KNOT. FINISH OFF THE SET UP WITH A SIZE 16 PHEASANT TAIL TIED TO THE 6X. FISH
THIS RIG DEAD DRIFT CASTING UPSTREAM KEEPING YOUR EYE ON THE STIMULATOR AS IT
FLOATS OVER LIKELY HOLDING AREAS. THE STIMULATOR WILL FUNCTION AS A STRIKE
INDICATOR BUT EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, A BIG FAT RAINBOW WILL COME UP AND CRUSH THE
STIMULATOR.
GIVE THE “STIMI” A TRY ON YOUR FAVORITE WATER YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED.
HOOK: TIEMCO 200R or SIMILAR #6 to 16
THREAD: ORANGE
TAIL: DEER BODY HAIR
RIB: FINE GOLD WIRE
ABDOMIN: YELLOW DUBBING
HACKLE: GRIZZLY, barb length same as hook gap
WING: DEER BODY HAIR
HACKLE: BROWN, one size larger than grizzly used on abdomen
THORAX: ORANGE DUBBING
TYING TIPS,
TIE IN THE WIRE AFTER SECURING THE TAIL. DUB THE THORAX COVERING ABOUT TWO THIRDS OF THE HOOK
SHANK. TIE IN THE GRIZZLY HACKLE BY THE BUTT, PALMER THE HACKLE BACK TO THE TAIL. SPIRAL WRAP THE WIRE
FORWARD TO THE HACKLE TIE IN POINT AND SECURE WITH THREAD. SNIP OFF THE EXCESS HACKLE TIP. HACKLING
THE FLY IN THIS MANNER WILL RESULT IN A DURABLE FLY, THE ADDED WEIGHT OF THE WIRE IS MINIMAL AND
WILL NOT AFFECT THE FLOATABLITY OF THE FLY.
